Day 4 and 5: My First Days at Montessori

Yesterday was my first day at the Montessori school. The differences between Dutch schools and schools here are so big, even regardless of the Montessori part. Because the primary school at which I'm doing my internship is a private school, there is no school bus (yes Dutch people, I did see some of the famous yellow school busses already. They really do exist!) and most of the children are brought to school by their parents. All the parents of course, come by car. Because there are a lot of cars, they do a 'car line' in the morning where everyone forms a long queue with their cars. The car line starts at 8:15 and ends at 8:45. The teachers of the school get the children out of the cars so the parents don't have to come out. School starts at 9 o'clock. Between car line and the start of school, the children can play outside.

The Montessori system in short means that the children have a lot more responsibitities. I've only been in the class or the 3-6 year olds yet. In here, there were teachers but they didn't stand in front of the class and teach the children like the way we are used to in 'normal' schools. The children have to do their own exercises and the teachers walk around and help the students if they ask for it. The other big difference is that the children are in classes of mixed ages, so the older ones can help the younger ones and the younger ones can pull themselves up to the older ones.

Another really interesting part about Montessori is the multicultural part. Montessori emphasizes on embracing other cultures and pays a lot of attention to the different cultural backgrounds of their students. That's why there are a lot of children with different nationalities in the Montessori school. It's really fun to work with kids with different cultural backgrounds. I also like to see how all the children look and are very different from each other, but they don't even seem to notice. For them, there is nothing more normal in the world. If everyone were like these kids, the world would be a way better place.

Although I really love to work with the little children, they really break me up. After the first day I was exhausted. Of course I'm probably also still a little bit tired from my flights and from the difference in time zone. Every night I fall asleep as soon as my head touches my pillow.
